This was too important to simply post in the fridge, where it sits now along with a couple of funny tongue-in-cheek/serious articles that you may also enjoy.OSLO, Oct. 12 — The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded today to Al Gore, the former vice president, and to the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for their work to alert the world to the threat of global warming.
The award immediately renewed calls from Mr. Gore’s supporters for him to run for president in 2008, joining an already crowded field of Democrats. Mr. Gore, who lost the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush, has said he is not interested in running but has not flatly rejected the notion. [more...] and [more...]
*Lost.* Ahem... Let's skip over that one now, shall we?
Anyone who hasn't seen his Oscar-winning documentary or is from the moon, check out An Inconvenient Truth, the movie that marks the moment much of the public became aware of his work on climate change. Out on DVD now. Walk to the video store and rent it. ;-)

It's surprising to me that Al wouldn't want to run again. Is is the process that he doesn't believe in anymore, like many americans I'm sure after the GW trickery. Democracy only works if our votes count, once the vote stops counting we don't have any say anymore.
That's why in Canada we need to take a stand for the things that make Canada a great place to live - health care, natural resources, and education. With the direction the Conservative party is taking us we may save a few cents on GST but it's at the expense of the environment, in that it seems they are putting business interests ahead of our environment. Not living up to the Kyoto protocol and not making an effort to seriously cut down on our environmental impact is short sighted and not in the best interest of the Canadian people.
But all that aside - Run Al! Run!
You said it Jam.
I think we all have to be willing to be more uncomfortable in the present in order to make some great strides for the future. Whether that means turning away from dangling carrots and focusing instead on real issues, and making the government - elected by the people to represent our voices - make meaningful change, down to personal choices around the environment, like deciding to consume less, choose wisely and stand up for something real. I just hope that enough of us have something real to believe in - something worth giving something of our own comfort for. Don't believe the hype. Yo.
