Teething. Must be worse than the dentist!

Poor Coley seems to be teething. All the signs are there. He's been drooling for Canada for some time now, wetting through anything or anybody he can. He's stuffing everything in his mouth and chomping like there's no tomorrow. And just this week he seems to be ramping up - he's a bit crotchety at times and tugging at his ear too, which I wouldn't have connected except that I read online that it's a symptom. Yay, Internet! Poor little guy.

So, although I have no proof that this works yet, I present to others in this predicament - tah dah - Hylands teething gel and tablets! They are homeopathic are 100% natural. No dyes, no drugs, no numbing agents and no sugar.

We bought the tablets a while back on the recommendation of Gramma Bonnie & Auntie Patti, when he started drooling and chomping, but since he seemed otherwise unruffled I figured that we would save them for a rainy day. They are a bit of trouble to prepare - you are supposed to dissolve them in water and feed them to baby on a spoon. This went well for us the two times we tried it, although I can't vouch for how much of it got inside him.

But, today we were at Whole Foods and I spotted the gel. Well, I actually high-tailed it to the baby products lane while Cole was arching his back in the carriage and tugging his ear while crying while I was trying to remain somewhat sane and buy groceries (after a morning of also trying to remain sane and do various things together). I was looking for an immediate placebo that would at least make me feel like I was being proactive about the situation... I think since Cole doesn't cry much it really freaks me out when he has an extended spell. Anyway, after trying everything else in my bag of tricks to calm him down, I thought this might work.

Note to Hylands packaging folks. MAKE THE PRODUCT EASIER TO OPEN! I ripped into the box in the check-out line only to discover that you need scissors to open the end of the tube. Trust - using my own teeth did not work. Once at home, we opened the package, rubbed some gel on and set about for our regular afternoon nap, which was fine - but it usually is. I have yet to see if this is some kind of miracle gel (in which case they could get away with selling it for more than the reasonable $10 it cost), but I like feeling like I have a potential solution.

Oh, poor Cole. I wonder if you are able to use the little tiny tablets that Hylands also has. They just dissolve right in baby's mouth and would be easier than mixing up a potion! I think that is what Dave & Sandra did, but not sure. Give her an email and see if that is so. I'm sure that Lisa also just popped the little pills right into Sophie's mouth. They really did seem to help.

Being outside really is a Godsend as well, the fresh air seems to calm them. They also like to chew on a wet/frozen facecloth. Poor little things, it doesn't seem fair that they have to go through this at their young age.

Good luck!! love, Patti

Thanks Patti for the advice - that would be so much easier. And less wet for Cole! :-)

BTW, as a general thought out there: does anyone have experience with the tablets/gel causing baby to have fewer bowel movements? Gross topic, however my ability to discuss poop in detail has certainly grown! We noticed that once we started giving these to Cole he suddenly went from pooping every day or at least every second day to nothing for like 5 days! And lots of wind...
