Lately Cole's naptimes have been taking on a new twist. Cole seems sleepy so we do our whole book-reading and snuggling thing and then I put him down to sleep with a little song and a pat and leave the room. Then, suddenly, he becomes super alert. He rolls in his crib, crawls out of his blankets and then I hear the soother fly out. Yes, fly out. It is quite often in the middle of the room. So, hearing this from the dining room table where I'm trying to be productive, I give him a minute. Maybe he'll decide he's sleepy, I think. Pray? Of course, I hear only giggling, perhaps the twinkling bell of his favourite stuffed monkey which is left at the bottom of the crib for those times when he wakes up in case he wishes to amuse himself for a little while. He is very good at that.
So our routine, anyway, is that I listen to the above and then go in and check on him. I find him standing in the corner of the crib most of the time, laughing at his reflection in the mirrored closet doors, and laughing hysterically at me when I pop in. It's frustrating that he won't sleep but so darned cute that I can't help but laugh.
We do the routine a few more times as above and then eventually he does go to sleep. And when he wakes from his nap I find him in exactly the same postion:

Question to you other mum's - how many naps (and how long and when) does your little one take?

Abby has been a bit all over the map these days. She's started going down later for her morning naps, which took me a while to notice. There were many mornings of putting her down at her usual time of 9:30, only to have her run a few laps of the crib and not fall asleep. Now if I wait until after 10, she's out in under 5 min. Afternoon naps are still a mystery...sometimes 1 sometimes 3 per day...who know?!
Delightful pictures...what a sweetheart@:0
James wakes at 5:30-6am and has three per day. First one is 2 hours after he wakes up (if not sooner) and it's the longest (almost 2 hours). Then two hours after waking from that he goes down for another 1.5 hours. Two hours after that he does 30 minutes - which brings us to about 3:30-4:00 ish...then down for bed at 6:30. Repeat. I have to nurse him to sleep each time which is the downfall at times, but other times I quite enjoy the time alone with him as he's sleepy and cuddly. I don't think he'll be cuddly for that long once he starts movin' and shakin'!
OK first, I love those dudes on the walls. I wouldn't sleep either with little blue dudes on my wall.
I don't have set nap times. What we do is 1st nap roughly 2 hrs after waking, then 2nd nap 3 hrs after waking from 1st nap, if 1st nap was at least 1.5. hrs. If he's in a short nap cycle (45 minutes) he usually is tired sooner. Bedtime is 6 pm and he can handle 3 hours awake but not more so if he wakes up from nap #2 earlier than 3 pm we either suffer all afternoon or try for another quicky to get us through till 6.
My god that sounds like a lot of math.
He doesn't go down on his own at the moment. I nurse or rock him to sleep. Am planning to start sleep training at about 9 months because son 1 had sleep issues between 7.5 - 9 months so if I train now it will be a waste of time and also I will be deaf. So be warned - sleep for sweet Cole might be a bit unpredictable for the next month or so.
do you know about ask moxie? www.askmoxie.org. Tons of sleep info in posts and comments from other mums.
