The artist can do what he likes*

We've been trying to introduce Cole to the fine world of crayons and I think it's taking!

Initially we got some of those heinous Crayola things that come with the handful of plastic wrapped around them (although thankfully at least you can replenish the crayon inside). But Cole enjoys munching on things in general - more so if they are remotely boob shaped... We didn't get much past Cole turning them over every time and sucking on them.

Then Auntie Kathy recently brought us some jumbo tri-cornered Melissa & Doug crayons. Non toxic, so I don't worry when Cole puts them in his mouth (although "not in your mouth" is probably one of my most-uttered phrases in general, after "let's order pizza!"). There are lots of other cool soy and whatnot options for crayons later on but most aren't right for a baby Cole's age. These are great. And since they aren't wrapped in anything, every part of them makes a mark. Perfect! Check out his artwork:

We've done some pages together before, but this is the first one with all just his colouring. Hooray for our little artist.

* This phrase is what my Dad used to tell me as a very wee one, when I was working on my own art projects. It always made me feel very important and artistic. It stuck with me and am glad to pass it along. :-)

Great idea! Love the saying too!

Did you plan for his crayon to match his shirt? I love how you've put your fridge to good use (as opposed to it's intended good use storing food)

actually no! it happened by accident - he picked the colours, so hey, maybe my love of orange is genetic?

yeah, it's a good thing we find alternate purposes for the fridge... Sometimes it's full of actual food, homemade leftovers and whatnot (like right now) but more often it's just all Cole's special foods and our leftover pizzas in there!

Just had a great idea! If we serve all his food to him in crayon form he might eat more!

Of course these are non-toxic so he *could* eat them but what about carrot based crayons or beet based? When you're done "drawing" it's time to eat.

I wonder if crayons come in flavors? Then they could be even more educational...the yellow one could be lemon flavored :) ,can't you just taste it?

i am sorry to be posting so late on this one, but i too love the saying. it reminds me of a friend of my family's who is an artist, i am sure it is something he would say too. i might have to steal it one day.

Great fostering of artistic spirit ... what an awesome thing for a parent to say.

I licked my Mr. Sketch (the smelly felts) markers once because they smelled SOOOOOO GOOOOOD.

I was not very young, either. I think I was 10.
