we took a whopping $25 out of the entertainment budget and bought tickets to see yesterday's vancouver canucks superskills competition. cole, despite not watching tv, somehow knows about hockey, and he was delighted! mostly he was impressed with the "cheering sticks" as he called them, and the fact that we bought popcorn. he also liked looking for fin and watching the zamboni go around and around. that's on the canadian citizenship test, i'm sure - "how much do you like watching the zamboni?" anything less than 8/10 gets you taken to the departures level at yvr.
i was concerned about the ill-timing - i am a fairly lackadaisical person myself about time, but over the last year and half + i have become militant about being home for normal naps. the event started at 1 - hey, right before naptime! for some odd reason we decided to go anyway, based on the logic that some people are very random about such things and what's the worst that could happen? all things considered it turned out just fine.

cole ate his fill of popcorn and watched the first of the feats of strength before he started to rub his eyes and plug his ears. thankfully he nestled up on my lap, leaned in against my chest and fell asleep. in the middle of a stadium of cheering fans, blasting sports dude banter, horns, whistles and terrible music, not to mention the stink coming from the white spot chicken sandwich of the girl next to us. i was most impressed and felt almost guilty when the mom in front of us looked wistfully back and said she wished hers would do the same. it certainly was nice, and it left an ear-shaped impression on my chest. he woke up right at the end and we walked the few blocks back to our place, toting hidden cotton candy behind us.
