give me five bees for a quarter
cole and i took a trip late last week to one of my favourite places in vancouver - van dusen gardens. we go often, usually, but we hadn't been since springtime. our trip had a mission - find the science world bees.
those of you who go often to science world may know the bees i'm talking about - the hive with plexiglass sides that allows you to watch the bees hard at work. cole loves that exhibit but the bees have been missing for quite a while. we recently learned that the bees were moved to van dusen gardens while the external upgrades/repairs are being done to good old world of science. perhaps they are updating the quasi-futuristic facade? it still looks like the not-too-distant future according to 1986, which i think is technically the present. we need a new not-too-distant-future to look forward to. my vote is for something involving lasers (kidding).
oh, i got off on a sci.wo. tangent there... but i digress! we went to see if we could discover the bees at van dusen gardens. cole and i found them, back near the maze and veggie garden. they've been moved into a traditional beekeeping box with a science world sticker on the side, so not quite a visual thrill, but cole was happy to see the worker bees flying around the area. according to cole, he is a worker bee and i'm the queen. he knows all about bees and told me that the workers bring nectar for the babies who are in the bee house in their sleeping bags.
we wandered lazily through the left side of the garden. i would have liked to tackle the boardwalk & turtles but it got on and we'll do that side next time. other notables? a gardener pointed us in the direction of a mysterious mulberry tree and we stuffed ourselves with them. delicious! we rang the temple bell, ran in the fields, smelled all of the low roses, threw pennies in the fountain and nearly made a mess of their gift shop. all in all a wonderful trip!

Oh that bell! It is heaven for the two-year old set!
what a fun filled day. i like that concept - mom the queen and cole the worker...
