sling-along

cole has recently developed a fascination with kangaroos and their pouches and likes to pretend to be a joey.  he likes to stuff himself, legs-first, up my t-shirt bottom when we're snuggling, and he has been going around tucking random things into his waistband and calling them "my joey".

i've been wanting something to carry him in so we could play kangaroos (and to give my arms an occasional break!) but long ago, as each seemed to reach the end of it's useful life, i gave away or sold our many, many baby carriers and slings. we still have a backpack frame carrier for hiking, and it's great, but it's no kangaroo pouch and it's too heavy for me.  it turns out that a sling is just about the easiest thing in the world to make!  i found a random how-to on the good old interwebs and within half an hour had cut, sewn and finished the sling.  i used a lovely piece of japanese linen-cotton blend mid-weight fabric.  the measurements for me were basically 22.5" wide by 55" long.

cole loves it! we took a trip to science world today with nothing but a sling (and the bus/skytrain!) and it was so liberating!  of course, we didn't bring a diaper, snacks or much else but it was fun anyway to be footloose for the day.  i will tuck this into the stroller for all those occasions when this growing boy wants to be extra close.
